Essential Pickleball Gear for New Players

Essential Pickleball Gear for New Players

You don’t need to spend a fortune to play pickleball — but a few essentials will improve your game and comfort right away.

If you’re new, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the paddle and gear options. Here’s what you actually need to get started.

  • Paddles:
    • Materials: Wood (cheapest), composite, graphite (lightest, best performance).
    • Weight: Light = faster reaction, heavy = more power.
    • Price range: $30–$150.
  • Pickleballs:
    • Indoor vs. outdoor (outdoor have smaller holes and are more durable).
    • Always have extras!
  • Shoes:
    • Court shoes are best (tennis or volleyball shoes work).
    • Running shoes aren’t ideal — too much forward/back cushioning, not enough lateral support.
  • Clothing:
    • Breathable athletic wear.
    • Sweatbands and hats for outdoor play.
  • Optional Extras:
    • Paddle grip tape for comfort.
    • Paddle bag or backpack.
    • Water bottle (hydration is key).

Start simple — paddle, shoes, and balls — then upgrade as you fall in love with the game.
