Pickleball Rules Every Beginner Should Know

Pickleball Rules Every Beginner Should Know

Pickleball is easy to learn, but the rules have a few quirks that trip up new players.

Whether you’re stepping onto the court for the first time or need a refresher, mastering the basics will help you play with confidence.

  • The Court & Equipment:
    • Court size = 20x44 ft (same as badminton).
    • Net height = 34 inches in the middle.
    • The “non-volley zone” (aka the kitchen) extends 7 feet from the net.
  • Scoring Basics:
    • Games are usually played to 11 (win by 2).
    • Only the serving team can score.
    • In doubles, both players serve before the serve goes to the other team.
  • Serving Rules:
    • Underhand serve only.
    • Must be below waist level.
    • Ball must clear the kitchen.
  • The Double Bounce Rule:
    • Each team must let the ball bounce once before volleys begin.
  • The Kitchen Rule:
    • You can’t volley (hit out of the air) while standing in the non-volley zone.
  • Common Beginner Mistakes:
    • Serving into the kitchen.
    • Forgetting to switch sides after scoring.
    • Stepping into the kitchen during a volley

Learn these basics, and you’ll be rallying like a pro in no time.
