Pickleball Rules Every Beginner Should Know
Pickleball is easy to learn, but the rules have a few quirks that trip up new players.
Whether you’re stepping onto the court for the first time or need a refresher, mastering the basics will help you play with confidence.
- The Court & Equipment:
- Court size = 20x44 ft (same as badminton).
- Net height = 34 inches in the middle.
- The “non-volley zone” (aka the kitchen) extends 7 feet from the net.
- Scoring Basics:
- Games are usually played to 11 (win by 2).
- Only the serving team can score.
- In doubles, both players serve before the serve goes to the other team.
- Serving Rules:
- Underhand serve only.
- Must be below waist level.
- Ball must clear the kitchen.
- The Double Bounce Rule:
- Each team must let the ball bounce once before volleys begin.
- The Kitchen Rule:
- You can’t volley (hit out of the air) while standing in the non-volley zone.
- Common Beginner Mistakes:
- Serving into the kitchen.
- Forgetting to switch sides after scoring.
- Stepping into the kitchen during a volley
Learn these basics, and you’ll be rallying like a pro in no time.
